The idea for an initiative, which would reach out to the Asian continent to provide those in need with quality education was conceived by Emir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in November, 2005.

Qatar Foundation is built on the principle that a nation's greatest resource is the potential of its people, and it aims to develop that potential internationally through a network of centers devoted to progressive education, research and community welfare.
ROTA's mission is to extend that assistance into Asia - where it's strategic geographic location gives it a unique opportunity to support its neighboring countries as they overcome developmental difficulties. In addition, more than 60% of Qatar's own expatriate community is of Asian origin, giving ROTA added insight and understanding of the needs and cultural norms of the Asian people.

The Arab Democracy Foundation aims to contribute to the provision of the necessary conditions for democratic transition in the Arab region through executable programs with measurable results.Through building networks, ADF seeks to consolidate cooperation and coordination among Arab and international civil institutions and associations. For instance, ADF participated in the workshop on building a civil society coalition for a citizenship campaign in the Arab region, in addition to organizing the “Arab-Turkish Forum: Exploring Political and Constitutional Reform in the Middle East and North Africa” and the workshop on Arab-Latin American dialogue.ADF also helped form networks connecting civil society organizations in Darfur.

Introduced the principle of dialogue between the followers of divinely inspired religions in Qatar with the fi¬rst conference for interfaith dialogue in 2003 under directive of His Highness Emir the Father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. Thereafter were held the annual conference in the following years between the followers of the three monotheistic religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. In the month of May 2007 the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue was officially inaugurated and the formation of the board of directors of the center, as well as a global advisory council of religious scholars in the three monotheistic religions was organized to assist in planning and communication with the corresponding institutions around the world.
In the month of June 2010 the Emiri Decree No. (20) of 2010, approved the establishment of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue, which aims to support and promote the culture of dialogue between religions, and peaceful coexistence among adherents of religions, and the activation of religious values to address the problems and issues of concern to humanity.
The decision to establish the center was met with a great welcome from scholars, researchers and academics interested in dialogue and cooperation between religions, civilizations and cultures of different issues, and scholars hailed this decision, arguing that the establishment of the center will contribute to the eff orts to build bridges of cooperation and understanding between the followers of religions and different civilizations and cultures around the world, which would contribute to an atmosphere of peace and justice, and alleviate misunderstanding because of the ignorance of different parties in conflict, and the entry of extremists from both sides to ignite hatred between peoples. The main role of the center is considered as spreading the culture and acceptance of others and peaceful coexistence among the followers of religions through dialogue.

Katara was born out of a long held vision to position the State of Qatar as a cultural beacon a lighthouse of art, radiating in the Middle East through theatre, literature, music, visual art, conventions and exhibitions.
This village shall be a glimpse of the future of a world where people of different cultural backgrounds overcome their national boundaries and embrace common causes to promote a united humanity.
Katara is where the grace of the past meets the splendour of the future.
The meaning of the name Katara
Since the year 150 AD, “Catara” was the first and most ancient name designated for Qatar Peninsula in geographic and historical maps. On the map drawn by the geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus in 150 AD, published in 882 AD -1477 AD and later in the Historical Atlas of Islam, the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula in the middle of the second century AD were identified. It also stipulated the geographical location of Qatar Peninsula under the name of Catara, North West of Gerra or near it, and to the west of the town of Cadara.
The name “Katara” appeared in the geographical and historical maps in early eighteenth century AD. In a French map of the Arabian Peninsula coast line, sea and gulf, the name was written “Katara” instead of “Catara,” which was the designation used by geographers from the map of Ptolemaeus in 150 AD until 1738 AD.
Tracking the etymology of Qatar throughout history is both useful and interesting given Qatar’s cultural and educational wealth. This cultural richness plays a very important role in promoting and building the Qatari society. The attachment to our ancient roots together with premeditated modernisation and technological advancement form the solid foundation of Qatari personality and values.
It was decided to revive Qatar’s olden name to uphold our connection to ancient heritage and to honour Qatar’s distinguished position since the dawn of history.
