The first Foodstuffs co-operative was formed in Auckland in 1922. On 6 July 1922, Foodstuffs founder J Heaton Barker called together members of the Auckland Master Grocers' Association to discuss plans for the formation of a co-operative buying group. The buying group expanded in 1925 with the introduction of Four Square branding on members' stores. Similar co-operatives were set up in other parts of the country, with Wellington commencing also in 1922, Christchurch in 1928 and Dunedin in 1948.
There have been various mergers between the small regional co-operatives, and today there are now three co-operative companies: Foodstuffs (Auckland) Ltd; Foodstuffs (Wellington) Co-operative Society. Ltd, and Foodstuffs South Island Ltd. Each operates independently and autonomously with its own board of directors, chief executive officer and management structure. There are no common members or shareholders.

Arab Trade Centre was established in 1971 as a branch of Misr Import & Export Co., (one of the companies affiliated to the Egyptian Ministry of Economy & Foreign Trade) in order to develop the mutual interest between Qatar and Egypt and establish a centre for marketing Egyptian products in the State of Qatar.
All the parties have done their best to achieve this goal and thereafter, many companies in Egypt started to export their best products to Qatar to help meet the country’s needs.
The Arab Trade Centre was officially opened by the Egyptian Minister of Economy & Foreign Trade as a branch of Misr Import & Export Co., in Qatar under the sponsorship of, and in partnership with, a Qatari Company (Darwish & Company). The owners of Darwish & Company extended all facilities and assistance to the Arab Trade Centre. The main activity of Arab Trade Centre was the marketing of Egyptian products and participating in Qatari tenders.
When Ahmed Kassem Darwish Fakhroo became the outright owner of Arab Trade Centre in 1983, the activities of Arab Trade Centre increased with the import of variety products from most other Arab countries, Europe and the Far East.
