In a pre-oil era, Doha was a modest, glitz-free fishing and pearling village. Qatar’s economy depended on the endeavours of Man and his Boat right up until the early 20th century, and sea-based trades were the main sources of income. Fishermen and divers passed skills and methods down through generations, while others learned to fashion intricate tools and build strong, elegant dhows to carry crews of men and their spoils. The traditional boats still bob out on Doha’s horizon, but these days they’re powered by engines, rather than sea breeze. And much like fishing, boat building remains an industry of tradition and a source of great local pride – you can still see craftsmen in action at boat yards near the port.
